This frame is really, really easy to build! The frame itself is constructed out of 1x4 furring strips with wire secured to the inside that is stretched across and held in place with screws. Decorative clothespins or bulldog clips can be used to clip notes or photos to the wire.
Materials:
Miter saw or miter box with a handsaw
Drill
Pocket hole jig with 1-1/4” pocket hole screws (or corner brackets)
Sandpaper – 80 grit, 120 grit, 220 grit
Primer and paint or stain and sealer
¾” screws
Wire and wire cutters
Needle nose pliers or Jewelry pliers
Decorative clothespins (I used chalkboard clothespins from Target)
Lumber:
2 – 1x4 furring strips at 6’ or 8’
Cut List:
2 – 1x4 at 34”
2 – 1x4 at 24”
Step One
Cut the pieces to length for the frame. Cut a 45° miter in each end of each piece. If using pocket hole screws, drill pocket holes in one mitered end of each board. Assemble the board using glue and 1-1/4” pocket hole screws.
If you are not using pocket hole screws, the frame can be assembled using corner brackets with screws. The brackets and screws can be spray painted before assembling the frame.
Step Two
Thoroughly sand the frame. The boards I used had a manufacturer’s stamp on them and I chose to leave them visible and not sand them off. Finish the frame as desired. (I used a metallic polyurethane.)
Step Three
Cut lengths of wire at approximately 32” long. Coil the ends of the wire with needle nose pliers or round jewelry pliers. Secure the wire to the inside edge of the frame with a ¾” screw through the coils. The wire doesn’t need to be stretched super tight it just needs to be semi-straight!
Step Four
Add the hangers to the back of the frame. I used soda can tabs with screws and washers! And here is the final product!
